One thing that a lot of people seem to enjoy is being scared by a good movie. From the first time that the Wolfman howled on the screen so many years ago, there's something that has attracted people to suspense and horror films like nothing else. What is it that makes people love to be scared? One thing that draws people to horror movies is the fact that most of the horror movies, with the exception of the ones that deal with the supernatural. Take Jaws for example. The threat of sharks when you are swimming in the ocean is very real. Depending on how clear the water is, you can't see your feet and you never know what is going to swim up to you. That's one reason why some people won't swim in the ocean, because of fear of the unknown. Another thing that horror movies very often are based upon are Urban Legends. In fact, there are two movies that have the words Urban Legends in the name: Urban Legends and Urban Legends Final Cut. In both of these movies the killer is using urban legends to take care of their victims. Urban legends are very popular because they are stories that 'really happened to a friend of a friend.' They seem so believable, because there is so much crime in the world that it seems plausible that someone might be hiding in the back seat of your car, or just might be making threatening phone calls from an extension upstairs. After all, if people are crazy enough to do some things, they might just be crazy enough to do others. The favorite movies of some people are the ones that are completely plausible. One such movie is Stephen King's Cujo. After all, the threat of rabies is very real and not every owner gets their animals vaccinated against this disease. So yes, if your dog gets rabies there is a very good chance that the loving pooch who licks your face and wags his tail might just turn into a ripping, growling, snarling killer. There are usually several categories that people who love horror movies fit into. They are either someone who really likes an edge of your seat thriller, where you are held in suspense a lot of the time. Then there are the people who love horror movies for the gore. The more blood and guts the better. Lastly, there are the people who just like to be scared outright. They scream in the movie theater, and they feel the chills going up their spine when the music comes on that is the telltale sign that something scary is about to happen. Let's take a look first at suspense movies. You know the type - these are the movies that are always keeping you on the edge of your seat, waiting for something to happen. For suspense thrillers, there really was no one better to portray them than Alfred Hitchcock. His movies keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat the entire time. He is truly the master when it comes to suspense. Then there are the blood and guts movies, the movies that make us put our hands over our eyes and sometimes make us want to vomit. These are the movies that make us forget that we are in a movie theater and it's all just special affects. Some good examples of gory movies are the Saw movies, Final Destination movies, and Hostel. These movies have a definite 'gross' factor and have the ability to give nightmares to those who watch them. Last but not least we come to the scary movies. These are the movies that you don't watch in the dark, the ones that have an element of suspense, some nice gore in them, and make you want to scream at certain points. A good scary movie would be Aliens. It has everything - some gore, suspense(especially when they are tracking down the aliens), and they can definitely make you scream even when you have seen the movies before. So, horror is definitely a genre that won't be disappearing anytime soon. As long as there are people who enjoy a good scare now and then, the directors of horror movies will be more than happy to oblige. |
